My New Motto

Alright, so maybe it's just the motto for this year. I don't know how long I can hold out and be a real tightwad but I am going to try.  I have things I would like and that means saving for those things which brings me to the save status.

I remember when I worked for a fabric store, they had a cost to buy and cost to make sheet made up for each of the stores samples.  When a new outfit was sewn up, the cost was broken down right to the amount of thread, then a comparable outfit was shown and the cost compared.  Of coarse the sewn outfit always came out with the best price.

I thought it would be interesting to do the same thing.  When I sew an outfit, I will try to compare it with cost to buy.  Now, with everything going up in price especially fabric, it should be interesting.

I also have my own bumper-sticker to remind me, how cool is that!!!

  1. Please let us know how this goes. I know some of the outfits Emily buys for Shelby are much cheaper to buy than to make.

    1. I am sure there are things that are cheaper to buy. I need to figure that out as I have not been good at comparing prices lately.
So I am also wondering how this is going to go, I am sure it will be an eye opener.

  2. Good luck with that Nonie.

I'm sure in the US you will manage this.

Most things in England are far cheaper to buy than to make. With fabric starting at a minimum of £5 a yard in the shops, and a single 100m reel of thread costing around £1.50 - and don't get me started on the patterns - I looked at a Vogue pattern yesterday - £12.95 for a pattern for just one blouse!!!! You can buy a teeshirt or blouse in a chainstore for about GBP 6 most times, so you couldn't get the fabric for that money, let alone buy the pattern, interfacing, thread and buttons too!
I shall get off my soapbox now!

  3. Nonie,I'll be following along to see what you come up with. I know somethings are as cheap or cheaper to buy but don't believe they are of the same quality. keep us updated please. Judy

  4. Oh, do you think we can rationalize which is less expensive or more expensive. Isn't the originality we pour into our creations what makes it great. Yes, you can buy at the big stores for less, I'm sure. But, when comparing--go to the catalogs that inspire us with our creativity...Remember the cute little bloomers at the Wooden Soldier? How much were they? And, the pretty little smocked dress we saw on the forum ($2.00) and would have been priced much more!!! And, can we price the Joy that little grandson gives us when we make him the very coolest boxers, after he asked for some that fit! He is growing. Nuff said out of me.

    1. RosieQ, you are so right, there are things we have to figure into our sewing. I haven't ran a big test yet, but what I have done is compared some of what the kids are spending verses what I could have made the same thing for. So far home sewing is coming out ahead.
